Gadget Memorandum
Gadgets are Entertainment"Gadgets are small technological devices with novelty or unusual features." So far the definition from the dictionary. But how are Gadgets really different from average objects? And do you qualify as a "Gadgeteer"? The answers to these burning questions can be found right on this page in our official "Gadget Memorandum".
History of Gadgets
Small inventions which make life more enjoyable span as far back as humanity itself. Even evident things like "The Wheel" or "The Telephone" were gadgets at the time of their invention. The word "Gadget" itself traces back to the 19th century, when it served as a placeholder name for a technical item whose precise name one can't remember. Today's gadget industry originated in the USA and gained first fame in the 70s. In Europe, England has emerged as the gadget pioneer during the 80s. For most other European countries, the idea of using products "just" for entertainment purposes is still a novelty. Today, Japan can be considered as the "Gadget Capitol" of the world. Tokio houses a whole district dedicated to Gadgets (Akihabara).
What Makes up Excellent Gadgets
An ideal gadget combines function, humor, fun, surprise, cleverness and design. Gadgets are a form of entertainment and the user's amusement should always be the focus. Most gadgets are characterized by novelty features and unusual functions. The anticipation of discovering them is an important element of the experience. Gadgets always make for a great gift, especially for those that "already have everything". Most Gadgets are fairly small and rather inexpensive. So even with a small budget you are guaranteed lots of fun.
Don't expect Gadgets to be...
Gadgets are certainly no ordinary convenience goods. They do not intend to be straightforward and neutral problem solvers. A gadget is no drudge that can be expected to withstand intensive usage for many years. Gadgets are fast moving and always in constant development. Their main focus is to entertain the user and they accomplish this the same way movies or video games do: Some you can never see or play enough and from others you expected much more. But it is the experience that matters.
Are you a real "Gadgeteer"?
You are curious, open minded and enjoy trying out new things? Even as an adult you kept your play instict and are always ready for a surprise? Then you definitely have the "Gadget Gene"! You know the Internet inside out, explore products preferably with others and enjoy gaining new experiences? Congratulations! You are a real "Gadgeteer". On the other hand, if you are disappointed when products don't last at least 10 years and prefer things to remain the same wherever possible, then Gadgets are probably not your cup of tea.
How to get the most out of a Gadget
With the purchase of a gadget you treat yourself with a little timeout from the daily grind. Enjoy the anticipation and make sure to spend some time with the discovery of your new product. Let your friends and colleagues participate. The fun factor will multiply and you will always have something to talk about. Don't expect to use your gadget every day. You will most likely only utilize it sporadically, but enjoy it every time anew. Reward yourself frequently, because chances are you really deserve it.
